Billing

Billing questions

The ones we get most, answered before your visit. First, who pays for what.

  • Vision plan

    Routine exam

Your vision plan pays for it.

  • Medical insurance

    An eye problem

Your medical insurance pays for it.

  • Written estimate

    If you pay yourself

We give you the cost before the exam and a written estimate.

How fees work

The six things people ask us most about billing, answered.

  • Insurance we work with

A routine eye exam is billed to your vision plan. A visit for an eye problem, a check of an eye disease or a follow-up is billed to your medical insurance. Many visits have both parts, and we bill each one to the plan that pays for it.

    • Vision plans through your job

    • Medical insurance through your job or the marketplace

    • Medi-Cal: the front desk confirms it before your visit

  • If you pay yourself

If you have no plan or prefer to pay yourself, the front desk tells you the cost of your visit before the exam. Lenses, special lens treatments and replacement lenses are billed separately, and we tell you that from the start.

    • The cost of the visit, before the exam

    • Lenses are billed separately

    • Ask about payment options when you call

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Ask us for an itemized receipt and send it to your plan to be reimbursed. Whether the plan reimburses you, and how much, is the plan's decision.

    • Itemized, at every visit

  • An estimate in advance

If you are not using insurance, we give you a written estimate before your visit: ask for it when you call. It is a good faith estimate of what we expect to charge you. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you have the right to dispute it.

    • In writing, before the visit

    • Each step and its cost

  • Checking your benefits

Before your visit, Reina checks your benefits where she can and asks you to confirm them with your plan too. The plan makes the final decision on what it pays.

    • We tell you before your visit

  • What the first visit includes

A complete exam of about 45 minutes with the doctor: your vision, the health of your eyes and your prescription. It is billed to the plan that pays for it. Your prescription is yours: at the end we give you a copy and you can fill it anywhere.
